PRESENTATION DESCRIPTION

As of 2019, nearly 1 out of every 5 newly married couples are mixed race/mixed culture. This presentation focuses on clinical practice with multicultural couples by focusing on systemic issues, intersectionality, assessing the impact of culture within relationship dynamics, understanding how societal factors and power dynamics may impact couple relationships, and addressing self-of-the-therapist issues related to working with multicultural couples.


LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Attendees will review typical terminology, patterns, and experiences relevant to working with multicultural couples

  • Attendees will learn about intersectionality and common systemic barriers that impact multicultural relationships 

  • Attendees will learn specific tools for assessment with this population

  • Attendees will examine how they may apply their clinical approach to working with multicultural couples from a socioculturally attuned lens


BIOGRAPHY

Claudine Lucena, MA, LMFT, LPC is Operations Director and a therapist at Ortiz Therapy Group. Her clinical focus is on cultural identity and relationships, life and family transitions, and relational stress. She frequently works with clients from immigrant backgrounds, creatives and artists, LGBTQIA+ folks, and neurodivergent folks. Her clinical work and research focuses on systemic barriers to mental health care and resilience for historically excluded/marginalized populations. Claudine is an AAMFT Minority Fellow and a PhD Candidate in Marriage & Family Therapy at Syracuse University.


This presentation is designed to be useful for all levels of training and experience.
