    TOPIC

The Family's Experience of Loving Someone with a Mental Health Disorder

    PRESENTER

    Elizabeth Devine, M.Ed., LPC-S

    PRESENTATION SUMMARY

Frequently, family members and those struggling with mental health issues struggle to know the best way to engage with each other. Although there may be no deficit of love and good intentions, too often everyone is left feeling depleted and caught in maladaptive patterns. In this presentation, we will discuss common challenges and perspectives from family members' experience as well as ways to engage in meaningful therapeutic work that supports everyone involved.

    LEARNING OBJECTIVES

    • Attendees will be able to identify common mindsets and emotional states of family members who are attempting to engage with and advocate for a loved one with mental health challenges and consequently how this influences behaviors and communication.

    • Participants will be able to explore guiding principles that may be helpful to adopt in informing how family members might most effectively advocate and support their own well-being as well as that of their loved one.

    • Attendees will gain greater insight into how to resource the whole family with tools to remain in balance and healthy, even in the face of painful circumstances.
