PRESENTATION SUMMARY

Murray Bowen considered family research central to the purposes of therapy and developed a family diagram format for understanding oneself as part of the family system over generations. Examples of "family work" and the steps people take will illustrate differences between this work and others strategies, ie. confronting the family, that are common in family therapy fields.

Learning Objectives

1) How family research provides opportunity to change automatic patterns of reacting that contribute to problems in life

2) What is gained by constructing a family diagram

3) Identify differences between other approaches and guidelines for family research as part of therapy based in Bowen theory

Biography

Victoria Harrison maintains a family systems psychotherapy practice, using neurofeedback and biofeedback for self-regulation, in Houston, TX where she also directs Center for the Study of Natural Systems and the Family. www.csnsf.org She commutes to DC to serve on the faculty of Bowen Center for the Study of the Family where she began to study with Murray Bowen in 1977. Her new book, The Family Diagram and Family Research, tools for working on differentiation of self, is now available.

This presentation is designed to be useful for all levels of training and experience.
