      TOPIC

      Trauma-Informed Counseling for Muslim Clients

      PRESENTER

      Sana Hussain & Sara Bawany

      PRESENTATION DESCRIPTION

In this presentation, Muslim Pakistani-American therapists Sana Hussain and Sara Bawany will introduce attendees to general principles of working with Muslim clients, both immigrant and American-born. This will include relevant political, historical, and statistical data as well as cultural and religious considerations that are necessary to recognize when engaging with Muslim clients.

We approach this presentation with a firm belief that the personal is political and that understanding Islamophobia is inseparable from our responsibility as therapists to remain informed about U.S. domestic and foreign policy. This is especially relevant given the ongoing genocide in Palestine, along with U.S.-backed warfare against peoples in Yemen, Syria, Iran, Lebanon, and Sudan that have corresponded with a sharp increase in Islamophobic incidents around the world.

      LEARNING OBJECTIVES

      • Understand how history, politics, and rising rates of Islamophobia impact the lived experiences of Muslims in America

      • Address barriers to Muslims in America seeking mental health care, including common myths and misconceptions

      • Discuss special considerations for working with Muslim clients from a systemic lens

      • Propose decolonized and anti-oppressive approaches for counseling Muslim clients
