    TOPIC

STRONG: A Way Forward for Counseling Men & Couples

    PRESENTER

    Kristal DeSantis, MA, LMFT

    PRESENTATION SUMMARY

When it comes to men and therapy, the stereotype is often that men are unwilling participants. STRONG is a new model for couples, and men, that challenges this narrative.

The STRONG Model of Relational Therapy incorporates elements from trauma therapy, attachment theory, and a variety of couples therapy models to bring a holistic and strengths-focused lens.

STRONG emphasizes focus on the relationship as the "identified patient" and mutual health as the goal. STRONG also gives the clinician a model for treatment planning with couples at any stage of their relationship. STRONG fundamentals are applicable for same-sex, nongenderbinary couples and individuals.

    LEARNING OBJECTIVES

    • Have a formula for what "health" means to help empower couples to continue to protect the wellness of their relationships outside the therapy room

    • Learn about the 4 levels of Safety and how they contribute to cycles of communication and conflict issues in couples

    • Learn about the common challenges that men face in counseling/dating/relationships

    • Learn how to establish a treatment plan and relational contract for therapy with couples that establishes collaboration and joint ownership of the process
