    TOPIC

Foundations of Neurodiversity Affirming Couples Therapy

    PRESENTER

    Adrienne Clements, MA, LMFT

    PRESENTATION SUMMARY

Misunderstandings around neurodivergence in mixed neurotype couples, especially communication and stress response differences, can create an invisible barrier to both a connected relationship and effective therapy. In this introductory presentation therapists will explore the foundations of what it means to provide neurodiversity affirming couples therapy. Neurodiversity affirming couples therapy honors the unique needs, strengths, and struggles of ALL human brains, both neurotypical and neurodivergent. Through neurodiversity affirming care, we help can help individuals and couples to embrace who they are and communicate with greater compassion, clarity, and confidence with one another.

    LEARNING OBJECTIVES

    • Understand the importance of neurodiversity affirming language in couples therapy

    • Explain what neurodiversity affirming care is and looks like in couples therapy

    • Learn how neurotype interface issues may manifest in a neurodiverse couple

    • Aid couples in identifying their unique support needs for their neurotypes
