      TOPIC

Uh oh - my client is talking about food… Do’s and Don’ts for Working with Disordered Eating

      PRESENTER

      Kathryn Gates, LMFT-S

      PRESENTATION DESCRIPTION

If you’ve ever had a client bring up feelings they have about food in session, when they’ve come to work with you on other presenting issues, this discussion is for you. There is sometimes a fear about continuing with a client, who has great trust, alliance and rapport with a clinician, simply because there hasn’t been formalized training in Eating Disorders. This presentation will offer Do’s and Don’ts for treating clients who present with disordered eating, so that you don’t feel like you must refer the first time you hear clients are feeling uneasy about eating.

      LEARNING OBJECTIVES

      • Ways of causing (unintentional) harm in a session with someone who is using food to manage emotions.

      • Ways to support a client in improving their relationship with food, whether or not they meet criteria for an Eating Disorder.

      • When to refer to an Eating Disorder Specialist or a HLOC.
